VSMS Hosts Estes First Graders for the Second Annual Kids Inquiry Conference
Kids Inquiry Conference
Posted on 03/28/2018
Eighth grade students from Valley Springs Middle School worked with and supported first graders from Estes Elementary School as they prepared for the second annual Kids Inquiry Conference (KIQ).

Eighth grade students guided first graders in scientific inquiry under leadership provided by first grade teachers from Estes and eighth grade science teachers from Valley Springs.

First grade students worked in collaborative peer groups, and they utilized inquiry-based methods to design and test scientific principles for a topic of choice (e.g., How far will a paper airplane fly when using the same airplane structure but different materials to construct the plane?).  Eighth grade students assisted first graders with their data collection.

Prior to presentations at the KIQ, first grade teachers taught students about the components of effective presentations, such as: stating a hypothesis, data collection methods, and data analysis.

First grade classes visited Valley Springs Middle School on March 27-28 to present their inquiry projects to peers, teachers, eighth grade students, and staff members from Valley Springs.

Congratulations to all students on jobs well done!
